Depends on how you look at it
One of the most creative groups on the radio seemed rather bland in this performance, despite holding their creativity and musicianship in high regard, there was a notable lack of effort. It was not any one thing that detracted from the potential of the performance, but a bunch of little things.
The opening band was terrible, and the execution of said death-polka was not stellar. All one could hear was the bass drum and the occasional rabid screams from the vocalist in a foreign language, which was rather surprising considering the band had 12 separate musicians onstage all attempting to be heard.
The guy at the mixing board did a little better once A Christmas Carol took the stage, but still should be given a lesson or two in how to mix a live band. The balance between instruments was non-existent, most of what could be heard was still bass drum and Serj. It is difficult to enjoy your favorite band when it sounds like the sound guy hates half of them.
The set-list was an interesting set-up, with the steadily-increasing popularity of the songs. They started off with Prison Song and then made their way through some of their less popular songs, slowly building the fervor of the crowd by working in more and more of the favorites. It was a set-list strategy that one usually does not see, so it worked quite well.
All of the performers were rather solid, but I must say I expected more from Serj. Serj did not sing the melody of the songs half of the time, but kept belting out a single note-the same single note, in half of the songs for a make-shift replacement. He is an amazing vocalist, and so I would not mind an improvised performance. I would not have minded alterations on their songs, because it is THEIR songs- they can do with them as they please. However, when it appears when the vocalist doesn't seem to care whether he is performing or not; it definitely shows, and it definitely comes through in the performance. I was not the only one who noticed this, everyone I went with also felt like "Serj was slopping it," as one put it.
So overall, the show was ok. It wasn't absolutely terrible, but it wasn't great. Did I have a good time? Of course, it was A Christmas Carol. Could they have done better? Of course, it was A Christmas Carol.

In a nutshell, this show was sweet! I have been waiting to see this band for a very long time. Layne was (and still is) one of the most distinct and groundbreaking vocalists of our time. Mr. Duvall killed it, wow! They played all the favs, 4 off the new one, and some real surprises. As I would've expected, they played a tribute to Layne and to the late Ronnie James Dio. Mr. Cantrell was spot on, the master that he is, and Mr. Inez and Kinney backed the powerhouse to a tee. Congrats to Mike BTW. The only disappointment of the night was that such a great band had to succumb to the lack of acoustics at Glens Falls Civic Center. The collective complaint was that the show was too loud. They need to reinvest in that regard if they are planning to host any more shows to the caliber of A Christmas Carol. Now that's a class act on top of being one of the best groups around, they are one of the current staples and datum from which rock'n'roll bands are judged and should aspire to. After all, aside from the Palace Theater in Albany, it's the only midsized concert venue in the area. I would just suggest that they play the Palace in Albany next time.
Absolutely one of my favorite concerts!
At one point there was so much fire in the air that it was legitimately hard to see the confetti. Despite sitting rather close to the stage, I could still feel the effects from the blasts of heat. If you’re any sort of fan of rock, I seriously recommend you make it to a show. I can’t imagine what it was like for the band being far from it. This is the one that showed me how much better the live music is, granted it was the second one I’ve ever been to. Overall, a fantastic show with music even better than it was on recordings. The effects were amazing, if not over the top. War Machine might be my newer favorite song if I can hear it like I did at the show.
